The Beginning’s
Founded
in 1996 as The Sad Light Hire Company by husband and wife team Philip and
Beverley Bunting, The Sad Light Hire Company is now one of the world’s leading
seasonal affective disorder light therapy companies. As a result of the SLHC
commitment to customer service, a helpful attitude and great value, business
has doubled yearly since the company was formed. All this helps SLHC offer one
of the largest ranges of light therapy equipment in the world including
hundreds of Seasonal Affective Disorder Lamps and Natural Alarm Clocks.
Philip
was a community pharmacist working in Southport and had noticed a rapid
increase in the number of antidepressants prescribed during the winter months. Beverley is a qualified beauty therapist and although born in England she had
gone to live in Australia when she was 12. Returning to England when she was 21
she noticed that she felt very depressed during the winter months. At times
this became so debilitating that she could hardly function. It was only after
reading a book entitled "Winter Blues" by Norman Rosenthal that
Beverley began to explore the possibility that she was suffering from Seasonal
Affective Disorder. She remembered disliking the winter months during her
childhood in England and was often ill and rundown. In the book Dr Rosenthall
makes many references to the winter blues or winter depression.
Her
father suffered in the same way with winter blues for many years and one of the
key reasons for emigrating to Australia was to escape the British weather. The
family thrived in the sunnier climate, but for Beverley the winter depression
returned when she came back to England.
Meanwhile,
Philip had read an article from The National Pharmaceutical Association which
detailed some information about Seasonal Affective Disorder and had a listing
of companies who supplied light equipment for the treatment of the disease. It
was from there that the company was born.
A True Family Business
Sad Shop (The Sad Light Hire Company Ltd) is a business that adheres firmly to the principles of good customer care, excellent after sales service and a wealth of knowledge that only comes with years of experience.
The combination of these principles, coupled with one on one personal communication with all our customers, makes Sad Shop a true family company.
The Opening of Sad Shop
After working Sad Shop (The SAD Light Hire Company Ltd)
from an office in our home for over 10 years whilst bringing up a young
family, the time came for us to 'move on' when it became impractable to
continue. We had worked hard to increase our business and we had outgrown
our dining room as a packing bench and the hallway as a distribution
depot. When we looked around, we found a small shop unit in the town
centre, just a few hundred yards from the beautiful main Victorian-style
boulevard of Lord Street in Southport. This was ideal for us to continue
to grow from as it enables people to call in to view the products on display
and try them out for themselves. The walk to and fro helped make us fitter
and healthier too!! It won't be long before we will need to 'move
on' again, but for now our SAD Shop suits us very well...
